Introduction
- Location: Othakalmandapam village, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, India.
- Deity: Lord Shiva as Putridankondeeswarar and Mother Goddess as Poonkothai.
- Temple Age: The temple is about 1000 years old.
- Orientation: Both the deity and goddess face east.
- Proximity: Located on the Coimbatore to Pollachi Highway, about 13 km from Coimbatore.
Puranic Significance
- History: The temple is believed to have been consecrated by a Chola king. After being damaged by floods, it was restored by local Shivanatiyars, who constructed several parts of the temple, including a 5-tiered Rajagopuram.
- Temple Structure:
- The temple has a five-story Rajagopuram at the east, with two prakarams.
- The inner prakaram houses the shrines of the god and goddess.
- The outer prakaram features shrines for Ganesha and Muruga, with a 5-foot tall Muruga idol.
- Ablution is performed at the Theerthalingeswarar shrine.
- Kumbabhishekam was performed on April 5, 1995.
Beliefs
- Prayer Box: A prayer box is placed in the temple where devotees’ requests are recited during daily worship, and it is believed that the Lord resolves them.
Special Features
- Puja Method: Pujas are performed in Tamil, including the recitation of Thiruvasakam, Shivapuranam, and Devara songs, which is a distinct feature compared to other temples where Sanskrit is used.
- Temple Structure:
- The Mukha Gopuram and Mulasthana Gopurams are visible from a distance, offering a blessed view.
- Sanctum Sanctorum: The sanctum is slightly elevated and houses the Linga Thirumeniyar form of Lord Putridankondeeswarar, with Adishesha as an umbrella over the deity.
- 63 Nayanmars: These saints stand in praise of the Lord within the temple.
- Other Deities:
- Dakshinamurthy in the south, Annamalai in the west, Brahma in the north, and Goddess Durga in the south of the main sanctum.
- Chandikeshuvarar in a separate sanctum.
- Poonkothai Nayaki: Goddess Parasakthi, depicted with four hands holding lotus and the Abhaya Hasta mudra.
- Shakti Forms: Icha Shakti, Kriya Shakti, and Jnana Shakti are situated around the goddess.
- Nataraja-Sivakami Ammal Sannidhi: The Ananda Thandeshwarar form of Nataraja graces the temple.
