Introduction
Airavaneswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Ootiyani Village in Needamangalam Taluk in Thiruvarur District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Airavaneswarar and Mother is called as Akilandeswari. Sthala Vriksham is Vilwa Tree and Theertham is Brahmma Theertham. The Temple is believed to be 1500 years old. This is a very ancient temple and is one of the 108 Shiva temples built by the Cholas.
Puranic Significance
Ootiyani: As Lord Shiva began cultivation of crops for all the beings here, the place is named as Ootiyani, meaning feeding. Lord is very merciful to make his devotees happy, healthy and prosperous. Lord directing a devotee to build a temple for him: The temple belongs to Chola period. It was buried under wild bushes. Some used the place to make kiln. They did not take any interest to pick up the many idols scattered there. It is believed that Lord appeared in the dream of one Maran and directed him to build the temple. A committee was formed then and the temple came into being. The consecration was performed in June 2013.
Special Features
Presiding Deity is called as Airavaneswarar and Mother is called as Akilandeswari. Lord Airavaneswarar is a Swayambumurthy. On 21, 22 and 23 in the month of Panguni (March April) the rays of Sun fall on the feet of the Lord from 6.00 a.m. to 6.15 a.m. Presiding Lord and Mother grace from their respective shrines each with one Kalasa. Sthala Vriksham is Vilwa Tree and Theertham is Brahmma Theertham. There are also shrines for Lords Dakshinamurthy, Kala Bhairava, Chandikeswara, Vinayaka and Bala Muruga. The place was earlier dark with wild bushes. After removing hem, the temple was built and the consecration performed in June, 2013.
