Introduction
Nungambakkam Agatheeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in Nungambakkam, near the Sterling Road Bus Stand; the Agatheeswarar Temple is renowned for its worship of Mother Akhilandeshwari, next only to Thiruvanaikaval. Although primarily a Shiva temple, it holds special significance for the goddess.
Puranic Significance
The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old. According to mythology, Sukracharya, the guru of the Asuras, worshipped Shiva to regain his lost sight caused by Vamana. Simultaneously, Parvati was also engaged in penance to Lord Shiva. When Shiva pondered upon whom to bless first, Ambikai gracefully allowed Sukra to receive the blessing first. Hence, it was decreed that devotees should observe Fridays as special for Ambikai, thus averting any adverse effects of Sukra. Lord Sukra accepted this condition, and hence Fridays are associated with Sukravaram. The goddess here is known as Sukrawara Amman as she is worshipped on Fridays.
