Introduction

• The Sri Ranganathaswami Temple, also known as the Talpagiri Ranganathaswami Temple or Ranganayakulu, is dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a resting form of Lord Vishnu.
• One of the oldest temples in Nellore, it is situated on the banks of the Penna River and is believed to have been constructed in the 12th century.

Puranic Significance

• The temple was initially founded in the 7th century by the Pallava kings. It was later established in its current form by King Raja Mahendra Varma in the 12th century.
• A notable feature of the temple is the Gaaligopuram (meaning “wind tower”), which stands approximately 70 feet high and is adorned with 10 feet of gold-plated vessels known as kalashams. This tower is located just before the primary entrance of the temple.
• The temple hosts a grand festival known as Brahmotsavam, celebrated annually during the months of March-April (dates may vary according to the Indian calendar).
• The walls of the sanctum sanctorum are inscribed with the Sri Vishnu Sahasranamavali, which lists the 1,000 distinct names of Lord Vishnu. Devotees often chant this while performing the parikrama (circumambulation) of the temple.
• The idol of Lord Ranganathaswamy is depicted in a reclining posture on Anantha, symbolizing divine rest.
• The temple complex also features a mirror house, a main attraction for devotees.
• There are distinct shrines for Goddess Rajya Lakshmi Devi, facing south, and Goddess Andal Ammavari, whose primary temple faces north.

Legend

• According to legend, Lord Vishnu and his consort, Goddess Sridevi, chose to visit Bhoo-Loka. Lord Vishnu instructed Adisesha to take the form of a hill at this location, which became known as Kshethra Talpagiri.

• The Gaaligopuram serves as a striking feature of the temple, constructed by Yeragudipati Venkatachalam Panthulu. It embodies the architectural grandeur of the temple and is an essential part of its identity.

Festivals

• The most significant festival celebrated at the temple is the Brahmotsavam, which takes place annually in March-April. This festival attracts numerous devotees and is marked by various rituals and celebrations, enhancing the temple’s spiritual atmosphere.
