Introduction

Nedungatangudi Kashiviswanathar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Nedungatangudi village, Nagai circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. This is a five hundred years old Shiva temple located in this small town. The temple is built for the memory of Kashi. Here the Presiding deity is called as Lord – Kasi Vishwanath and Mother is called as Kasi Vishalakshi.

Puranic Significance

Here the Lord is towards the east side of the sanctum and the goddess is towards the south side. In the sanctum sanctorum there is a small Lingamurti of the Lord. There is a small Nandi opposite to the lord. At the gate of the sanctum sanctorum there is Vinayagar and on the other side there is an idol of Naga. The temple has been without any proper maintenance for many years, the temple is in dilapidated condition.

Vengoji, the brother of the famous Maratha king Shivaji, who included the three districts known today as Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam, established the rule of the Thanjavur kings in 1674. After him, Saraboji I, Tukkoji, Pratabasimmar, Tulaja II, Saraboji II, … Shivaji II reigned. The son of Narpradapasimman, the second Tulachamanna Nagurtharkasela came to know that he had been granted a grant of the revenue of 15 villages, one of which is Neldungatankudi, and this grant is written on a copper plate called Shikta in the Darga.
