Introduction
Shri Shantinath Jain temple is located at Ramtek, Nagpur, Maharashtra, is also considered as a famous jain temple because of its beauty and its charm. This temple is also called Shri Shantinath Digambar Jain Atishaya Kshetra and it includes another 15 shrines and temples that have been framed by the use of a wall. The main deity that is worshiped at the Shantinath Mandir is Bhagwan Shantinath who is believed to grant the prayers of all his devotees. It is also believed that Ramchandra visited this temple once. Ramtek is considered as a very small town that lies in the northeast of Nagpur and approximately 42 kilometers away from Nagpur city.
Puranic Significance
As per the legends, the story of the temple goes like this – 4000 years ago, a ruler from Nagpur, Appasaheb Bhonsle, came to Ramteke with his minister, Vardhman Savaji to make a Ram Temple. One day, the minister came late. When asked the reason behind the act, he said, “oh king, I am Jain. I am bounded by the rule that of not eating food without worshipping Jain idol, so I went 30 km away (present day kamptee Jain mandir) for worship. Thus, a royal order was passed to search the idol of Bhagwan Shantinath, which was later found under a tree. Later, a temple was made at the same place. Ram Temple was also built atop a nearby hill which is now called Ramgiri Hills.
Special Features
Ramtek is also famous for its possession of the Jain temple that is regarded to be very ancient. Ramtek became very popular after the Digambar Jain Acharya Vidyasagar visited Ramtek and then stayed at the place for four months in the year 1993, 94, 2008 and 2013. An idol of Lord Shantinathji is Tempting one. It belongs to Chaturtha Kala and is carved beautiful 13 feet 5 inch tall in yellow stone. It is in standing posture.
