Introduction
- Location:
The Nagapattinam Amrithakadeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated in the Nagapattinam circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. - Significance:
This temple is the westernmost among the twelve temples of Dunagai and is located behind the Malai Iswaran Temple, next to the Nilayatashi Amman Temple. - Primary Deities:
- Lord Amritakadeswarar (Shiva)
- Mother Brahmananda Sundari
Puranic Significance
- Mythological Context:
- The Devas (gods) and Asuras (demons) churned the ocean of milk to obtain nectar (Amrita).
- After obtaining the nectar, the Asuras, displeased with sharing it, set up a Theertham (sacred water body) at this site to perform Shiva Puja.
- During their rituals, the Amrita Kalasam (nectar pot) transformed into a Shiva Linga, symbolizing divine intervention.
- It is believed that Lord Amritakadeswarar appeared and blessed them.
Temple Architecture
- Rajagopuram (Entrance Tower):
- The temple features a three-tiered Rajagopuram, adorned with intricate sculptures depicting gods and demons churning the ocean of milk.
- Vishnu Mandapam:
- This structure was constructed by Thiru Anandarangampillai, a noted interpreter during the French Empire.
- His portrait is engraved on one of the mandapam’s pillars.
- Sanctum and Mandapams:
- The sanctum, called the Mugamandapam, includes two black stone pillars at its entrance.
- The sanctum itself is made of stone, while the upper structure is built using brick.
- The temple also houses shrines for Durgai, Lingotpawar, and Tenmugan (a form of Lord Shiva).
- The Tenmugan shrine features a beautifully crafted black stone mandapam.
- Unique Features:
- The Sundaravi Nayak shrine in the southwest has a door adorned with seven Nagas.
- An ancient Sunday idol is located near the Durga shrine.
Sthalam Theertham (Sacred Pond)
- The temple’s theertha is situated near the south mukhamandapam.
- Though the pond is drying up, it holds great significance as a sacred water body used for rituals and purification.

- The temple is believed to be over 1000 years old, showcasing its rich heritage and architectural marvels from ancient Tamil culture.
