Puranic Significance
It is hearsay that Lakshmi Devi worshiped the Lord here. That is why in this temple, there was a separate shrine towards the Lord for goddess. Agathiyar, who came to the south, worshiped at many places, the number of places he worshiped is 163 is a rough count. The Lord of this temple is one of them. Based on the current design of the temple, it can be dated to the early period of the Cholas. The Temple is believed to more than 1500 years old.
An old brick shaft stands today in complete disrepair. All sanctuaries and round temples have been destroyed. All that remains is the three-tiered Rajagopuram, which also stands as a tree. Some of the idols in this temple are kept separately in a tin shed. Adjacent to the temple tower, a dome has been built in which a danda of Agathiya Mamuni is kept. Pujas are held on Pradosha days and special days.
