Introduction

Location:

• The Mugwa Subramanya Temple is located in the village of Mugwa, in Honavar Taluka, Karnataka, about 475 km from Bangalore.
• The temple is a significant shrine dedicated to Lord Subramanya, the God of Serpents, and is built in the Kerala architectural style, common throughout the Tulu region.

Puranic Significance:

• The temple has a connection to an ancient legend where Lord Subramanya (Murugan) punished himself by transforming into a serpent after insulting his elders. His self-punishment restored his honor, and he regained his divine form after the Goddess intervened.
• Vasuki, the leader of the Nagas (serpents), took refuge in Subramanya to escape the wrath of Garuda. Subramanya saved the Nagas, and they began worshiping him as their deity.
• According to another story, Sage Narada meditated in the region, and heard a divine voice predicting that Subramanya would appear there to benefit the world. Upon opening his eyes, Narada saw Lord Subramanya in his Archavatara Murthy (divine form) and was instructed to build a temple in this sacred place.

Beliefs:

• Devotees visit the temple seeking relief from ailments such as marital infertility, skin diseases, stomach disorders, and chronic problems. It is believed that worshiping Subramanya can bring healing and blessings in these areas.

Special Features:

• The Mugwa Subramanya Temple is believed to be over 1000 years old.
• Upon entering the temple, devotees encounter the Tirtha Mandapam and have a vision of Murugan’s peacock vehicle.
• The Moolavar (main deity), Balasubramanian, is adorned with silver armor and resides in the sanctum sanctorum.
• Nagar idols (serpent idols) can be found in the Nagavanam (serpent grove) area of the temple premises, further highlighting the connection with serpent worship.

Festivals:

• Daily poojas are held, and special pujas are performed on Sashti (the 6th day after the full moon) and Tuesdays, which are significant days for Lord Subramanya.
• Devotees offer bananas as part of the worship during these special occasions.
• The temple attracts large numbers of devotees, especially on special days.
