Puranic Significance
Brahman once forgot the Pranava mantra. Subramanian imprisoned him for that. Seeing this, Eason rebuked his son. Murugan realized that he had insulted the elders and punished himself. (Transformed into a serpent). At the request of the Goddess he regained his self-image. In this situation, Vasuki, the leader of the Nagas, took refuge in Subramanian, who was afraid of Garuda. He immediately saved the Nagas from the Garuda. So the Nagas worship Subramaniam as their god.
Once Narada Sage visited the world. Then he looked for a quiet place suitable for penance. He sat there and meditated to feel the divine vibrations of the mind. Then he heard the voice saying that he was going to rise in this place for the welfare of the world and to dedicate himself here and build a temple. Naradhar opened his eyes. In front of him he saw Subramanian posing beautifully as Archavatara Murthy. He is the Lord Murugan who bestows grace in this place.
