Puranic Significance:
- The temple is associated with an ancient legend involving a merchant from Madurai who lived near Srivaikundam in Tuticorin District.
- The merchant’s pregnant wife faced difficulties during childbirth, and there were no medical facilities available. The couple, feeling helpless, wandered along the banks of the Tamiraparani River.
- In the midst of their despair, the wife fainted, and an old woman appeared. She helped the wife deliver a beautiful baby boy in a hut along the riverbank.
- After searching for his wife, the merchant eventually found her at the hut and was overjoyed to see her and the newborn child.
- The wife explained that an old woman had assisted her during childbirth. Despite waiting for the woman to return and thank her, the merchant and his wife were unable to see her again.
- That night, the merchant had a dream in which the old woman revealed herself to be Gunavathiyamman, the goddess. She explained that she was the one who had helped the couple and that they should build a temple for her at the spot where she had appeared.
- Following the goddess’s instructions, the merchant constructed the temple at the birthplace of Gunavathiyamman on the banks of the Tamiraparani River.
