Puranic Significance
On 30.05.2018, with the help of the local people, they started digging the building parts of this temple buried in the mound of mud after looking around. Excavated and buried in the largest Shiva temple has been revealed. The area where this Mayanur Shiva temple is located is in a very low lying area on the south bank of Cauvery River. The temple, which began to be buried by the great flood, must have been covered with mud and thorn plants. There was a massive circular wall and a large gateway. This is followed by a 16-foot hall in an irregular pattern. The foundation of the temple is 4 feet below the current level. There is a sanctum sanctorum on the west side of the temple. The fact that this temple has been worshiped since the Pallavar period can be gauged by the Veena Dakshinamurthy near this sanctum.
A Ganesha idol excavated in the corner of the temple, Ganesha, Hanuman, and Murugan idols placed on the walls during the construction of the temple. There are two Shiva Lingams in this temple. On the right side of Rudrakshapureeswarar is Shiva Neela Kandeswar who was brought from the river Kaveri.
Akilandeswari Ambal Sanctum was on the right side of Rudrakshapureeswarar facing south side. An idol of Ambal has also been erected at the place where the sanctum was located. There are also Chandikeswarar, Kalabairavar, Dakshinamurthy and Navagrahas are there.
