Introduction

- Shri Krishna Janmasthan Temple is located in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh, and is built around the prison cell where Lord Krishna was born to Mata Devaki and Vasudeva.
- It is a significant pilgrimage site for Hindus as it is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna.
- The temple has been destroyed and rebuilt several times by different rulers throughout history. It was finally rebuilt with the help of industrialists.
- The temple is especially vibrant during festivals like Janmashtami, Basant Panchami, Holi, and Deepavali, which are celebrated with great fervor.
- Puranic Significance:
- The temple was initially built by Krishna’s great-grandson Vajranabha around 5000 years ago.
- Rebuilt in 400 AD during the reign of Chandragupta Vikramaditya, but destroyed in 1017 AD by Mahmud of Ghazni.
- It was reconstructed in 1150 AD under Raja Dhrupet Dev Janjua but later destroyed by Sikandar Lodi in the 16th century.
- Raja Veer Singh Bundela rebuilt it in 1600s with a large sum, but it was again destroyed by Aurangzeb in 1669 AD and replaced by a mosque.
- During British rule, the temple site was auctioned in 1815 and later reconstructed through the efforts of Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya in 1951.
- The temple was finally completed in February 1982.

- Sri Krishna Janmasthan Temple Complex includes several notable structures:
- Keshavdeva Temple: Built in memory of Jadiadevi Dalmia by Ramkrishna Dalmia, inaugurated in 1958.
- Garbha Griha Shrine: The believed birthplace of Lord Krishna inside a prison cell. A marble pavilion and underground cell were built here. The shrine dedicated to Yogmaya, an eight-handed goddess, is nearby.
- Bhagavata Bhavan: Built in 1965, dedicated to the Shrimad Bhagavata. It includes statues of Radha and Krishna, Balarama, Subhadra, Jagannath, Rama Lakshman Sita, Garuda, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Durga, and Shivalinga. The hall’s walls are adorned with frescoes from Krishna’s life and a circumambulation path with engravings from the Bhagavad Gita.
- Potra Kund: A large water tank believed to be the first bathing place of Lord Krishna.
- The complex also includes the Ayurveda Bhavan, International Guest House, shops, library, and open space for performances.
