Introduction

The Aadhi Vaidyanatha Swamy Temple, located in Mannipallam Village, Sirkazhi Taluk, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is part of the Pancha Vaidyanatha Kshetrams, a group of five Vaidyanatha Swamy temples around Vaitheeswaran Koil.           

Puranic Significance 

  1. Presiding Deity: The main deity of the temple is Aadhi Vaidyanatha Swamy, also known as Rathnapureeswarar, representing Lord Shiva. The deity is in the form of a tall Lingam. The Mother deity is known as Thaiyal Nayagi.
  2. Location: The temple is located approximately 5 kilometers from Vaitheeswaran Koil. It is situated along the bus route from Vaitheeswaran Koil to Manalmedu.
  3. Historical Significance: The temple is believed to be over 1500 years old and has historical and cultural significance. It was originally known as Pallirukkuvelur and has a history dating back to the Pallava dynasty.
  4. Temple Orientation: The temple is east-facing, which is a common orientation for Hindu temples.
  5. Architectural Features: The temple has a three-tiered Rajagopuram (entrance tower), Nandi (sacred bull), Dwajastambam (flagstaff), and Balipeedam (sacrificial altar) facing the main sanctum. Dvarapalas (guardian deities) are positioned near the sanctum.
  6. Sub Shrines: The temple complex includes sub-shrines dedicated to various deities, including Bhagavatha Vinayaga, who is depicted in the act of writing the Mahabharata. Students often visit this shrine seeking academic excellence. Additionally, the temple houses shrines for Dhanvatri and Maha Lakshmi.

Despite its age and historical significance, the temple has been reconstructed and maintained over the years by devoted individuals. The presence of these deities and the beautiful architecture make it a place of worship and cultural heritage for those who visit and seek blessings from the divine
