Introduction
The Siva Subramanya Swamy Murugan Temple of KumarasamyPettai in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu is a revered Lord Murugan temple with a history dating back over 800 years. The temple gained significant popularity due to an incident that occurred about 100 years ago.
Historical Incident:
- This temple wasn’t widely known initially, but it gained fame when an incident unfolded around 100 years ago. A thief entered the temple with the intention of stealing the ornaments of Lord Siva Subramanya Swamy Murugan.
- When the thief touched the idol of Lord Siva Subramanya Swamy Murugan, he suddenly lost his vision. In pain, the blinded thief began crying out, and people nearby rushed to the temple to investigate what had happened.
- The thief confessed to his intentions and revealed that he had lost his vision when he touched the deity. The people present, seeing his punishment, decided not to further penalize him.
- This incident spread, and word of the deity’s power started to circulate throughout the region and beyond.
Siddha’s Penance:
- About 300 years ago, a Siddha (ascetic) performed intense penance in this place. During his penance, his body was found disintegrated, with limbs separated.
- Villagers were shocked and concerned but prayed to the Siddha. He instructed them to build a temple on the spot after he had achieved Samadhi (a deep meditative state) and installed Lord Siva Subramania in the temple.
- The temple was constructed in accordance with the Siddha’s wishes.
Devotee Prayers:
- Devotees visit the temple to seek blessings for various reasons, including the removal of delays in wedding proposals, child boon, and the realization of their wishes.
- Rituals performed by devotees include abishek (sacred bath) to Lord Siva Subramania with rose water and curd, as well as lighting lamps in coconut shells.
Annual Festival:
- The Thai Poosam festival is grandly celebrated in the temple during January-February. This festival is a significant occasion for devotees to pay their respects to Lord Murugan.
The Siva Subramanya Swamy Murugan Temple of KumarasamyPettai is not only a place of worship but also a testament to the divine power associated with it, as exemplified by the incident with the thief. It continues to be a place where devotees seek blessings and experience the spiritual aura of the temple.
