Introduction

The Subramanya Swamy Temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan and is located in Kothapet, a prominent locality in Vijayawada City, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, India. Nestled at the foot of the revered Indrakeelaadri Hills, this ancient temple is believed to be over 1500 years old and holds significant religious importance.

Puranic Significance

  • The temple is closely associated with the legend of Lord Murugan (Shanmukha), who is revered for his victory over the demon ruler Tharaka and his brother Shurapadmasura. According to the legend, after the defeat of these demons, Lord Murugan, along with his brother Ganesha, reached Kumara Parvatha, where he was welcomed by Indra and his followers. During this time, Devasena, the daughter of Indra, was married to Lord Murugan. The wedding ceremony took place on Margashira Shudha Shashti at Kumara Parvatha.
  • During the wedding, waters of several holy rivers were brought for the ceremony, and these waters became part of the Mahabhishek, which is now known as Kumaradhara.
  • The serpent king Vasuki is also an integral part of the temple’s legend. He performed penance for many years in the Biladwara caves of Subrahmanya to avoid the attacks of Garuda. Lord Shanmuka appeared to him and declared Vasuki as his primary devotee. Hence, prayers offered to Vasuki are considered offerings to Lord Subrahmanya.

Special Features

  • The temple is situated on the Indrakeelaadri Hillock, offering a scenic and peaceful setting.
  • The temple is maintained by a renowned family known as the Iddipilli family.
  • The temple is particularly popular among devotees from Tamil Nadu, who visit regularly to offer prayers to Lord Murugan.
  • A unique feature of the temple is that it represents three forms of Lord Murugan:
    1. Dhandayudhapani Swamy (in the form of a young boy),
    2. Lord Murugan with his consorts,
    3. Lord Murugan in the form of a serpent.
