Introduction
Kohur Rudrakodeeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Located in the Kohur village, Kilvellur circle, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu.Kohu is a small village. Here the Presiding deity is called as Rudrakodeeswarar
Puranic Significance
After the puja of Murugan, Anjuvatthamman came to this place and worshiped the Lord, so the Lord is called Rudrakodeeswarar. Hence it was called Ko-Ur and later became Kokur. Therefore there is a scene above the entrance where Lord and Goddess are blessing Kamadenu.
The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old. There is a large temple facing east. It is far from the town along the banks of the river. The temple is spread over two acres, the temple is surrounded by high walls. Above the entrance is carved a scene of the Lord giving grace to Kamathenu. Beyond it is the front hall and before that are the Nandi hall and the altar. Flag post and Vinayaka is also there. A large royal tree is growing in the eastern corner. Inside the entrance there is Biravar Surya on two floors.
The front hall, Artha Mandapam is the sanctum sanctorum of the Lord. Lord Rudrakodeeswarar is a medium sized lingamurthy. Goddess name is unknown. Ambigai is the south facing shrine in Mahamandapam. Nearby is a shrine for Lord Nataraja. Tenmugan is beautiful in karuvarai kotams. On either side of him are idols of Kollimala Arul Vot Siddhar Janagiram Swami. This dilapidated temple was completely renovated in 1999.
There is separate sanctum dedicated to Vinayagar Maha Vishnu Murugan in Prakaram. Muruga’s sanctum is slightly larger with a front hall. Between Murugan and Vishnu is a mandapam with a flat roof in which three lingams are placed. These may be lingas according to Perunkoil. Sandesar shrine is also big; worshiping Rudrakodeeswarar gives self-confidence, courage and courage to face enemies.
