Introduction

The Mahadeva Temple in Kirari Godhi Village, Bilaspur District, Chhattisgarh, is an important historical and religious site.

Puranic Significance

  • Location: The Mahadeva Temple is situated on the bank of a small stream in Kirari Godhi Village. It is notable for being one of the protected monuments in Chhattisgarh, recognized and preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India. The temple’s location by a stream adds to its charm and natural surroundings.
  • Architectural Features: The temple follows the traditional temple architecture of the region. It is oriented towards the west and consists of a sanctum, an antrala (an antechamber), and a mandapa (pillared hall). Unfortunately, over time, the antrala and the mandapa have been lost, leaving only the sanctum standing.
  • Architectural Style: The temple showcases an architectural style characterized by a pancharatha plan at the back, featuring five projections or divisions. The shikara (tower) over the sanctum, while partially damaged, still retains its lower portion.
  • Decorative Elements: The exterior walls of the temple are adorned with intricate sculptures and carvings. These include depictions of the Ashta Dikpalas (guardians of the eight directions), Nataraja (Lord Shiva in his cosmic dance form), various deities in different forms, mithunas (erotic couples), dancers, and more. These artistic elements offer insights into the cultural and religious themes prevalent during the temple’s construction.
  • Historical Origin: The temple has a rich historical background, as it was built by the kings of the Kalchuri Dynasty of Ratanpur during the 12th century CE. The temple is a testament to the architectural and artistic heritage of the region during that period.
  • Accessibility: The temple’s location, approximately 13 kilometers off the Bilaspur to Raipur route, makes it easily accessible to visitors interested in exploring its historical and artistic significance.

The Mahadeva Temple in Kirari Godhi Village stands as a testament to the region’s rich history and architectural heritage, preserving its cultural significance even in its partially ruined state. It remains an important site for those interested in history, art, and religious heritage.
