Introduction
The Arjuneswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located on the banks of the Amaravathi River in Kadathur village, Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu. The primary deity of the temple is Lord Shiva, who is known as Arjuneswarar. He is also referred to by alternative names such as Marudheesar, Marudhudaiyar, and Marundheesar. The consort of Lord Arjuneswarar is worshipped as Gomathi Amman.
Puranic Significance
The temple has a rich history dating back to the 10th century, with a connection to the Chola dynasty. It is said that the temple was constructed during the rule of Vikrama Chola. The name “Arjuneswarar” is associated with the belief that Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata, worshipped the Lingam at this temple during his stay in the region. This is why the deity is named Arjuneswarar. The discovery of the Lingam is linked to a story from the nearby village of Karathozhuvu, where cows returning from Kaniyur village were found discharging milk onto the root of a Marudha Tree. When the tree’s root was cut, blood began to ooze from it, and the Shivalinga was discovered beneath. This scar can still be seen on the body of the Lingam.
