Introduction

Joda Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Baihar Town in Baihar Tehsil in Balaghat District in Madhya Pradesh State of India.

Puranic Significance

The temple was constructed in the 12th century CE, highlighting its historical significance and the architectural expertise of that era.The complex consists of two temples that face each other, both of which are now in a ruined state but continue to reflect the grandeur of their original design.

First Temple: This temple comprises a Sanctum and Antrala. The Sanctum is topped by a Nagara Shikara, a characteristic feature of North Indian temple architecture, while the Antrala is crowned by a Sukanasi. To ensure stability, brick-built structures have been added to support the temple’s sides and prevent collapse.The main entrance door of the first temple is plain and lacks elaborate decoration, except for a floral motif on its lintel.

Second Temple: The second temple includes only the sanctum, which features a stepped pyramidal tower over it. Like the first temple, a brick-built structure has been added to safeguard the sanctum from damage or collapse. Behind this shrine, there is a four-pillared mandapa, which might have served as a space for rituals or gatherings.

Sculptures and Fragments: The temple premises contain several damaged sculptures and architectural fragments, providing insights into the intricate artistry of the period and the stories and deities that were depicted in the temple’s design.
