Introduction

Jakhu Temple, also spelled Jakhoo Temple, is a revered ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Hanuman, located in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. Perched atop Jakhu Hill—the highest peak in Shimla—it stands 2.5 km east of the Ridge and sits at an altitude of 2,455 meters (8,054 feet) above sea level.

The temple is accessible via foot, horseback, taxi, or the popular Jakhu Ropeway, an aerial lift that connects the temple with central Shimla. Developed by Jagson International Limited, the ropeway opened in 2017, offering a convenient and scenic route to this sacred hilltop.

Puranic Significance

A significant cultural and spiritual site, the temple hosts a vibrant Dussehra festival each year. Historically, until 1972, this celebration took place at Annadale. Today, the temple is also renowned for its towering 108-feet-high statue of Lord Hanuman, one of the tallest Hanuman idols in the world. Unveiled on 4 November 2010, this impressive monument stands taller than Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer, which is 98 feet (30 meters) high. The statue was built at a cost of Rs. 1.5 crores, and its public unveiling was conducted by actor Abhishek Bachchan.

According to the Ramayana, Hanuman paused at this very spot while searching for the Sanjivani Booti to save Lakshmana, adding a deep mythological significance to the location.
