Introduction
The Saptamatrika Temple in Jajpur Town, Odisha, is a significant religious site dedicated to seven mother goddesses, namely Brahmani, Vaishnavi, Shivaduti (Indrani), Narasimhi, Chamunda, Kaumari, and Varahi.
- Location: The Saptamatrika Temple is situated in Jajpur Town, Jajpur District, Odisha, India. It is located on the south bank of the Baitarani River at Dasasvamedhaghata, close to the northern compound wall of the Jagannatha temple complex and the Siddha Ganesa temple.
- Significance: The temple is dedicated to the seven mother goddesses, known as the Sapta Matrikas. These goddesses are considered attendants of goddess Viraja and are believed to protect the inhabitants of Jajpur.
- Historical Background: The idols of the Sapta Matrikas were originally installed during the Dasasvamedha sacrifice performed by Somavamshi ruler Yajati Keshari II during the 11th century CE. However, during the Kalapahad invasion, the idols were thrown into the riverbed. They were later recovered from the riverbed and enshrined in the present temple. The temple itself was constructed during the late 19th century CE.
- Orientation: The temple is facing north, which is less common for Hindu temples, as east-facing temples are more typical.
- Architectural Features: The temple is a rectangular hall that houses the idols of the Sapta Matrikas. These idols are larger in size and depict the goddesses in various postures:
- Chamunda is depicted in maharajalilasana.
- The other goddesses are depicted in lalitasana.
- All the idols are seated on lotus pedestals, with their respective mounts carved in front, and they hold babies in one of their left hands.
- Each of the idols is approximately 1.82 meters x 0.91 meters in size.
- Control: The Saptamatrika Temple is currently under the control of the Endowment Department, Government of Odisha.
The temple is not only a place of worship but also holds historical and cultural significance, representing the rich heritage of the region. The idols of the Sapta Matrikas, enshrined in this temple, are an important part of the local religious tradition and history.
