Puranic Significance

  • Construction by Vikrama Chola: The temple was built by Vikrama Chola, and it holds historical significance due to its connections with the Chola dynasty.
  • King Kulothunga’s Blessing: King Kulothunga Chola, who had no children, prayed to Mother Ambica (likely referring to Shanthanayaki from the nearby Parvatheeswar Temple) seeking a child. By the goddess’s grace, he was blessed with a child and offered anklets as gratitude. It is said that even today, Ambica is depicted with anklets on her lotus feet.
  • The Legend of Madhalolai: A demoness named Madhalolai was cursed by Sage Durvasa for disturbing his penance. After giving birth to two demon sons, Ambaran and Amban, she died. The sons grew arrogant and began to torment noble souls, seeking refuge at Lord Shiva’s feet.
  • Transformation and Deception: Mother Parvathi, knowing the demons’ intent, transformed into an alluring maiden to distract them. Lord Vishnu, disguised as an old man, told the brothers that only the mightier could choose her, leading them to fight each other.
  • Ambaran’s Downfall: Ambaran eventually sought Ambica, who appeared as a fierce Kali. Frightened, he fled, but she pursued and defeated him. After this, Lord Vishnu requested Lord Shiva to restore his left side to Mother Parvathi. Devi, in penance, created a Linga of sand and waited for Lord Shiva to join her.

Special Features

  • Lord Vishnu’s Shrine: The temple is notable for having a dedicated shrine for Adhikesava Perumal, who blesses devotees from the west side of the temple.
