Introduction
Introduction
The Padmakshi Temple, located in the Hanamakonda area of Telangana, India, is one of the oldest temples in the region. Dedicated to Goddess Padmakshi (Lakshmi), the temple is notable for its Jain imagery alongside its Shaivite elements. This historical site, originally a Shaivite cave temple, transitioned into a Jain shrine during the rule of the Kakatiya chief Prola II in 1117 CE, reflecting the region’s dynamic religious and cultural history.
Puranic Significance
- Origins and Development:
The site began as a Shaivite cave temple, with artificial caves west of the present-day structure, possibly carved before the 5th century CE, resembling early Brahmanical cave designs.- A Jain shrine was introduced during the reign of the Chalukyas of Vatapi or the Rashtrakutas, signifying the growing influence of Jainism.
- Historical Inscriptions:
- An inscription from 1117 CE details the establishment of a Jain shrine called Kadalalaya-basadi, commissioned by Mailama, the wife of Kakatiya minister Betana-pergada, and land donated by Medarasa of Ugravadi.
- Post-1156 CE, the Jain shrine gave way to a Brahmanical temple, likely influenced by the rise of Veerashaiva traditions.
- 19th Century Conflict:
- The Jains petitioned the Nizam of Hyderabad in the 19th century, claiming the site’s origins as a Jain shrine. However, the Nizam’s investigation confirmed its initial Shaivite roots, leading to the grant of land in 1869 CE for temple upkeep.
Special Features
- Annakonda Pillar:
A defining feature of the temple, this quadrangular column made of black granite greets visitors at the entrance. It showcases intricate carvings, reflecting the architectural brilliance of the time. - Jain Sculptures:
The temple houses rich sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras and deities, preserving its Jain heritage despite later Shaivite influences. - Bathukamma Festival:
The temple becomes a vibrant hub during the Bathukamma festival, attracting lakhs of women who celebrate by immersing floral arrangements in the pond at the base of the Padmakshi hillock, blending devotion with cultural festivities.
