Introduction
The Hampi Uddana Virabhadra Temple, located within the Hampi ruins in the Bellary district of Karnataka, is a significant religious site dedicated to Lord Shiva. It stands in close proximity to the monolithic Lakshmi Narasimhar temple, both facing north.
This temple holds a prominent place among the Hampi Ruins and is devoted to Sri Virabhadra, a form of Lord Shiva known locally as Muddanna or Mudu Viranna. The presiding deity is Uddana Veerabhadra, depicted as a standing figure measuring 3.6 meters in height and possessing four arms. In these four arms, Veerabhadra holds an arrow, a Khadga (a type of dagger), a bow, and a shield. On the right side of Sri Veerabhadra, there is a small image of Daksha with a goat’s head.
According to inscriptions, the primary deity, Mudu Viranna, was installed by Dalavayi Jangamayya in 1545 CE during the reign of the Tuluva Dynasty. The temple comprises a sanctum sanctorum, an antarala (vestibule), and a sabha mantapa (assembly hall). Inside the antarala, there is an idol of Nandi, along with representations of Uma Maheshwari, Lord Ganesha, and a distinctive lingam known as the Sarvanga Linga.
