 The Mula Virupaksha Temple in Hampi, Karnataka, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated on the Hemakuta Hill.

Historical Significance:

• The temple is believed to have been built by Immadi Rachamalla of the Sindhas of Kurugodu in 1119 A.D. Interestingly, the name “Mula Virupaksha” implies its ancient origins, with “mula” meaning origin or base.

Location:

• The Mula Virupaksha Temple is located on the northern slope of Hemakuta Hill, offering a vantage point overlooking the Virupaksha Temple complex in Hampi. Hampi is a historic site located on the banks of the Tungabhadra River in the eastern part of central Karnataka, near the state border with Andhra Pradesh.

Architectural Features:

• The temple consists of three main parts: the Garbhagriha (sanctum sanctorum), an antarala (vestibule), and a Sabha mandapa (assembly hall).
• The Garbhagriha has a square floor plan and houses a Shiva Linga as its central deity. It features intricate architectural details, including Purnakumbhas on the door jambs and a Sikhara with four stepped tiers.
• The Antarala, or vestibule, also has a square floor plan and contains an idol of Nandi, the sacred bull associated with Lord Shiva. Its door is adorned with pancha sakhas and features a depiction of Gajalakshmi on the central lintel space.
• The mandapa, serving as the assembly hall, is partially covered and partially open at the front. It includes niches on the north and south sides, which were once used for housing sculptures or images.

Religious Significance:

• The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and the Shiva Linga in the Garbhagriha is the central deity of worship.
