Tiruvazhudeeswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located in Eruvadi, Thirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu.
Puranic Significance
Historical Significance:
- The Tiruvazhudeeswarar Temple is believed to be around 1600 years old.
- It was known as “Veera Ravivarma Chathurvedhi Mangalam” in the past.
Pancha Asana Sthalams: According to the Tamirabarani Mahatmiyam, this temple is one of the five important Shiva temples in the Tirunelveli region, collectively known as the Pancha Aasana Sthalams. The other temples in this group are Kalakkad Satyavageeswarar Temple, Nanguneri Tirunageshwarar Temple, Vijayanarayanam Manonmaneesar Temple, and Shenbagaramanallur Ramalingar Temple.
Temple Features:
- The temple can be entered through an entrance arch, and it has an unfinished Mottai Gopuram (tower). The gopuram remains incomplete due to historical factors such as foreign invasions and political situations.
- The Fish Symbol of the Pandyas, engraved on the western side of Nandhi Mandapam’s roof, suggests that the temple was constructed during the Pandyan rule.
- The presiding deity is known as Tiruvazhudeeswarar, and the goddess is Periya Nayagi Amman. Notably, both the presiding deity and the Utsavar idols look similar.
- In the temple complex, you can find Nandi, Balipeedam, and Dwajasthambam facing the sanctum.
- Theertham (sacred water body) associated with this temple is the Nambiyaru River.
