Introduction

• Location: Situated in Bhagamandala, Kodagu district, Karnataka, near the confluence of the three rivers—Kanike, Cauvery, and Sujyothi.
• Deity: Primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Bhagandeshwara, the temple also houses shrines for Lord Vishnu, Lord Ganesha, and Lord Subrahmanya.

Puranic Significance

• Legend of Bhaganda Maharshi: The temple is named after Sri Bhaganda Maharshi, who performed penance here to invoke Lord Shiva’s blessings. The sage installed the Shiva linga, believed to embody Lord Shiva’s divine presence.
• Historical Mentions: The Skanda Purana mentions Bhaganda Kshetra, the ancient name of Bhagamandala, and narrates the saint’s devotion. It is also believed that Lord Subrahmanya, pleased with the sage’s penance, blessed him and named the place Skanda Kshetra.
• Divine Presence: Lord Shiva, pleased with the saint’s devotion, assured His presence and blessings to all devotees through the Shiva linga installed by Bhaganda Maharshi.

Special Features

• Architecture: The temple reflects Kerala-style architecture with Dravidian influences. The ceiling is intricately carved with mythological stories, while the granite walls are adorned with floral motifs and murals made from vegetable dyes.
• Shrines: In addition to the main Shiva shrine, there are also idols of Lord Ganesha, Lord Narayana, and Lord Subrahmanya.
• Renovation: The temple was renovated in 1790 AD by Maharaja Veera Rajendra Wodeyar of Kodagu. It is located close to the Triveni Sangama, the meeting point of the three holy rivers.

• Maha Shivaratri: The most significant festival celebrated at the Bhagandeshwara Temple, occurring annually in February or March. Devotees gather in large numbers to seek blessings during this festival.
