Introduction
Chidambaram Varaneeswara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, located in the Chidambaram circle, Cuddalore district, Tamil Nadu. There were thirty-two temples in the town, only a few of them still exist today and one of them is the Varaneeswarar temple. The Varaneeswarar temple is located in Aranganathan Nagar, on the eastern side of the Jnanaprakasam pond, in the southeast of Periyakoil.
This is a small Shiva temple towards the west side of the town. Here the Primary deity is called as Lord Varaneeswarar and Mother is called as Vishalaksi. The Lord Varaneeswarar is present as a medium-sized lingamurthi. Visalakshi is towards the south and Vinayaka is towards the north side of the Lord Sanctum. It seems that only Lingamurthy and Vinayaka are ancient, other idols are newly added. The Temple is believed to be 1300 years old.
