Introduction
Kapilesvara Temple in Charada Village, Binika Block, Subarnapur District, Odisha, India. This temple dedicated to Lord Shiva has a rich history and architectural significance.
- Construction Period: The Kapilesvara Temple is believed to have been originally constructed in the 10th century CE by the Somavamsis. However, local tradition attributes its construction to the reign of Ananga Bhimadeva III of the Ganga Dynasty.
- Renovations: The temple has undergone renovations over the years, with contributions from local rulers and restoration work conducted by the State Archaeology in 2002.
- Location and Management: The temple is situated on the western bank of the Mahanadi River and is currently under the control of the Kapilesvara Temple Trust Board and the Endowment Department, Government of Odisha.
- Architecture: The Kapilesvara Temple follows the Kosalan style of temple architecture with central Indian influences. It is square on plan and comprises a sanctum, antrala (vestibule), and a pillared mandapa (hall). The mandapa features two lateral projections on the northern and southern walls.
- Presiding Deity: The sanctum of the temple enshrines the presiding deity, Lord Kapilesvara, in the form of a Shiva Linga placed within a circular yonipitha.
- Exterior: The exterior walls of the temple have been heavily plastered with lime mortar, which has concealed the original architectural and decorative features. However, the temple premises still contain various artifacts, including idols of Nandi (the sacred bull), Salabhanjika (a female figurine), Bhooda Ganas, and architectural fragments.
