Introduction

The Radha Madhav Temple in Bishnupur Town, Bankura District, West Bengal, India, is a significant Eka Ratna temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu, specifically Lord Krishna, known as Radha Madhav.

  • Historical Significance: The temple was constructed by Queen Churamony Devi, who was the queen of Krishna Singha, around 1737 AD. It is part of Bishnupur’s rich cultural and architectural heritage.
  • Temple Architecture: The Radha Madhav Temple follows the Eka Ratna architectural style. It is square in plan, measuring approximately 11.1 meters on each side and standing at a height of 9.2 meters. The temple’s architecture includes a sloping roof with a single sikhara, which is characteristic of the Bengal Temple style. The upper part features a north Indian sikhara. There are three arched gateways at the entrance, and unlike most other temples in Bishnupur, this temple has three arched openings on only two sides.
  • Art and Sculptures: The temple once featured intricate stucco images that have, unfortunately, been lost over time. It is said that the temple had bas-relief images depicting scenes from the Ramayana and Krishna Lila, as well as depictions of deities like Dashavatara, Ganesha, and various animals.
  • Surroundings: The Radha Madhav Temple is set amidst a lush green environment, and the premises include a Kirtanshala, a Do Chala Bhog Mandapa (a unique feature not found in other temples in Bishnupur), and various sculptures and carvings that add to the temple’s charm and historical value.

This temple is one of the Eka Ratna temples in Bishnupur and, like others in the region, showcases a blend of architectural styles and artistic elements. It remains an important site for both religious and cultural purposes, offering visitors a glimpse into the rich history and heritage of the area.
