Introduction
The Kusakeswara Temple is a significant Lord Shiva temple located in Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha, India.
- Twin Temples: The Kusakeswara Temple is one of a pair of twin temples, the other being the Labakeswara Temple. These twin temples are situated on both sides of the road, almost opposite to each other. They are in close proximity to the Ramesvara Temple on the right and the Satrughnesvara group of temples on the left side of the road leading from Kalpana Square to Bindu Sagar.
- Historical Period: These twin temples were constructed during the 14th or 15th century CE by the Suryavamsi Gajapati rulers. The architecture and design of these temples reflect the historical and artistic heritage of the region.
- Living Temple: Similar to the Labakeswara Temple, the Kusakeswara Temple is a living temple, actively used by devotees for worship and religious rituals.
- Orientation: The temple is facing west, following the traditional temple architecture principles of Odisha.
- Presiding Deity: The primary deity of the Kusakeswara Temple is Lord Shiva, who is known as Kusakeswara. Lord Shiva is worshipped in the form of a Shiva Lingam, which is placed on a circular yonipitha within the sanctum sanctorum.
- Architectural Style: The Kusakeswara Temple follows the Pidha Deula architectural style, which is characteristic of Odisha temples. This style typically features a curvilinear tower and various architectural elements.
- Exterior Decor: The outer walls of the temple are adorned with niche images, including depictions of Lord Ganesha, Lord Kartikeya, and Goddess Parvati. These niche images add to the temple’s artistic beauty and religious significance.
