Introduction

The Mahadeva Temple, also known as Cherkin Temple, located in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, is a place of great historical and religious significance.

Puranic Significance:

  • The temple is believed to have been constructed during the 14th century when the Kakatiya rulers migrated from Dantewada to Jagdalpur. They initially settled in Bastar before making Jagdalpur their capital.
  • This historical context links the temple’s construction to the Kakatiya dynasty, adding to its historical value.

Architectural Features:

  • The Mahadeva Temple is recognized as a protected monument by the Archaeological Survey of India.
  • The temple is elevated on a platform approximately two feet high and comprises two main sections: the Deula (Sanctum) and the Mukha Mandapa (front porch or hall).
  • The temple’s architecture features a Gajalakshmi Panel at the lintel of the Mukha Mandapa.
  • Guardian figures called Dvarapalas are present on each side of the doorjamb of the Mukha Mandapa.
  • The left jamb and the lintel of the sanctum have original carvings, including a relief of Lord Ganesha on the lintel.
  • A unique feature is the depiction of Chamunda on the left side of the sanctum doorway. This terrifying representation of Chamunda features her emaciated body, sunken eyes, and an open mouth. She is seated on a corpse, flanked by a jackal and an owl, and adorned with a garland of skulls.
  • Inside the sanctum, there is a Swayambhu Moorthy (self-manifested deity) in the form of a Lingam, symbolizing Lord Shiva. The Lingam stands at approximately 1.5 feet in height.
  • Notably, there is a sculpture of Chamunda piercing the neck of a Rakshasa (demon) with one of her arrows.

Condition and Preservation:

  • Despite its historical and architectural significance, the temple is currently in a dilapidated state, emphasizing the need for preservation and restoration efforts to protect its cultural heritage.
  • Preservation initiatives are crucial to maintain and safeguard such significant historical sites.

The Mahadeva Temple’s unique architecture, historical context, and religious significance make it an essential part of Chhattisgarh’s cultural heritage.
