Architectural Significance: The Baranagar Shiva Temple is one of the terracotta temples constructed by Rani Bhabani, the Queen of Natore, in the 18th century CE. These temples are celebrated for their intricate terracotta ornamentation and unique architectural features.
Monument of National Importance: The temple, due to its historical and architectural significance, has been recognized and classified as a “Monument of National Importance” by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Patronage of Rani Bhabani: Rani Bhabani was known for her grand vision of constructing 108 temples along the banks of the Hooghly River in Baranagar. She aspired to elevate the status of Baranagar to that of Varanasi. However, over time, many of these temples were lost to the ravages of time and changing circumstances.
