Introduction

The Kariyamanika Perumal Temple in Ayanavaram, Chennai, is a venerable place of worship dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Puranic Significance 

Presiding Deity: The main deity of the temple is known as Kariyamanika Perumal, representing Lord Vishnu.

Mother Goddess: The temple also houses a shrine dedicated to the Mother Goddess, known as Kanagavalli.

Historical Significance:

  • The temple is believed to be between 500 to 1000 years old, making it one of the oldest temples in Chennai.
  • Despite its age, the temple is relatively small in size and features a five-tiered Raja Gopuram (temple tower).

Architectural Features:

  • The sanctum sanctorum houses Kariyamanika Perumal along with his two consorts, Sri Devi (Lakshmi) and Bhoo Devi. This signifies the harmony and balance in the divine union.
  • A Gaja Stambha (elephant pillar) and an idol of Garuda can be found opposite to the sanctum.
  • The Mother Goddess, Kanagavalli, has her own separate shrine in the temple corridor. Her idol is seated in a serene posture.

Adjacent Temple: The more famous Parasurama Lingeswarar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is located next to the Kariyamanika Perumal Temple.
