Introduction
Avaneeswarar Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located at Avaniyapuram Village in Thiruvannamalai District of Tamilnadu. This temple hosts Maragatha Lingam installed by Aadhi Sankarar. This Temple is located at the base of the Avaniyapuram hill. Avaniyapuram is located at about 16 kms away from Arani, 75 kms from Thiruvannamalai and 25 kms from Vandavasi. The temple is located on the Vandavasi – Arani highway. The temple is located at about 135 kms from Chennai. Here the Presiding deity is called as Avaneeswarar/ Simhapuriswarar and Mother is called as Mangalambikai.
Puranic Significance
According to an inscription found in the temple, it is believed that the temple was built during the reign of the Pallava kings. It is believed that the Goddess may have created this place in the name of Avaninarayana Saturvedimangalam. In inscriptions also this place is known as Narayanamangalam. The researcher believes that it may have been built in the 9th century AD.
Athri munivar – Sons of Anusuya couple, He was a disciple of Kakapujandar. He wandered in search of a place suitable for penance in search of this sage. At one place he saw a mountain with the appearance of a lion sitting on it, and a forest near it. Sensing that it was the right place, the sage took refuge there. The Lord was pleased with the sage’s penance and blessed him with a vision. The place itself was earlier called Simhampuram and is now known as Aavaniyapuram.
Established by Sage Eranda, the temple in which the Lord resided with the name Simmapuriswara eventually fell into disrepair and disappeared with the earth. Later, when he came to the forefront of the year, he was in the area, and that he was in the forefront of the country, and that he had been able to do the same thing, and that he had been able to do the same thing as a sankarum. Adi Shankar worshiped and worshiped the god named Avaniswarar and built a temple and continued worshiping it.

Special Features
Shivalinga is standing in the sanctum sanctorum and is holding a huge robe. To the south is Mother Sanctum lives in posture where Ambal stands with the name of Mangalambhikai. Before the presence of the Lord, Nandeeswarar appears in a beautiful form. And the six-faced God with twelve faces is very beautiful. This god has greatness. A display with a wheel in hand cannot be seen anywhere else.
