Special features
Panchayatana is an architectural style characterized by the construction of the main shrine on an elevated platform, accompanied by four smaller subsidiary shrines at the four corners, resulting in a total of five shrines. Among these subsidiary shrines, three remain intact, while only the lower portion of the south-west corner shrine remains. The primary shrine faces east and comprises several sections, including the sanctum, antrala, sabha mandapa, and torana.
The main shikara (tower) takes on a steep mountain-like form, symbolizing Mount Meru, which is considered the mythical source of creation in Hindu cosmology. The shikara features intricately decorated roofs that rise grandly, culminating in the shikara’s peak. Of the subsidiary shrines, the south-western and north-western ones are dedicated to Surya (the Sun deity) and Vishnu, respectively, both facing east. The front two shrines are devoted to Sakthi and Ganesha. The south-eastern shrine faces north, while the north-eastern one faces south. The exterior walls of these shrines are adorned with rich sculptures depicting deities, animals, floral motifs, and geometric patterns, adding to the architectural beauty and religious significance of the temple complex.
