Introduction

The Pandava Cave Temple, located in Arakandanallur near Thirukovilur Town in the Thirukovilur Taluk of Kallakurichi District, Tamil Nadu, India, is a significant shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Location: The Pandava Cave Temple is situated in the rock boulder below the Rajagopuram (main entrance tower) of the Arakandanallur Atulya Nadheswarar Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple complex is located on the banks of the Thenpennai River.

Historical Significance: This rock-cut cave temple is considered the southernmost rock-cut temple of the Pallavas, with the exception of Tiruchirappalli. The Pandava Cave Temple is believed to be around 1500 years old and is a fine example of early Pallava rock-cut temple architecture.

Puranic Significance: According to legend, the Pandavas, from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, stayed in Arakandanallur for a few days during their exile. It is said that they took refuge in the caves near a water tank in this area. The temple complex features five cells, and it is believed that each of the Pandavas used one of these cells during their stay. Bhima, one of the Pandavas, is said to have created the water tank with his mace, and it is referred to as Veeman Kulam (or Bheema Kulam). There are two water streams known as Draupadi Theertham and Pandava Theertham on the hillock, believed to have been used by the Pandavas and Draupadi for various purposes. The Pandavas are believed to have worshiped Lord Shiva at this temple, seeking his blessings to regain their kingdom.

The temple’s association with the Pandavas and the ancient rock-cut architecture make it a historically and spiritually significant site.

Location and Accessibility: The temple is situated approximately 500 meters from Thirukovilur Railway Station and is about 47 kilometers from Kallakurichi. Buses traveling between Thirukovilur and Villupuram pass through Arakandanallur, providing easy access to the temple.

The Pandava Cave Temple continues to be an important pilgrimage destination and a testament to the rich cultural and religious heritage of the region.
