Puranic Significance
Sage Satti is an ardent devotee of Shiva. He married Thirasanthi. When Thirasanthi became pregnant, Satti Sage was killed by a monster called Uthiran. A son was born to Thirasanthi. The child crawled into the mother’s lap and regretted seeing her mother, the woman who had lost her husband. This child, called Parashar, became a Maharishi after learning the scriptures. He performed a great sacrifice to destroy the monster Uthiran who killed his father. With the fruit of this sacrifice he destroyed Uthiran. Despite being a monster, he was harmed by killing his life. He went on pilgrimage to many places to get rid of evil. When he came to Ithalam, Lord Shiva appeared and gave him liberation. He got up at Ital for his request.
