His mother Magali came to protect Lord Murugan who did penance at Kilvelur, hence the name Anaimangalam as this is the place where he was worshipped. The Temple is believed to be 1500 years old. The Lord has an east-facing sanctum sanctorum and the Artha Mandapam is built in a conical shape on the facade. From inside, can see the sky and the roots are tangled on all four sides of the wall. The Lord is a medium sized linga murti. There are statues of Sandesar Murugan in the Artha Mandapam. A short distance in front of the Lord is Nandi and an altar.
