Introduction
Veera Marthandeswarar Temple is dedicated to God Shiva located in Ambasamudram in Thirunelveli District of Tamilnadu. Presiding Deity is called as Veera Marthandeswarar. Utsavar is Somaskandar. Mother is called as Nithya Kalyani. Theertham is Harihara Theertham. The temple is near the Ambasamudram bus stop. Ambasamudram is 37 Kms from Tenkasi. Nearest Railway Station is located at Ambasamudram. Nearest Airport is located Madurai and Thiruvananthapuram.
Puranic Significance
King Veeramarthanda was a staunch Shiva devotee. He desired to build a temple for Lord Shiva but could not locate a site for the same. Lord appeared in his dream and showed this place. King built the temple then. Lord Shiva is named Veera Marthandeswarar after the name of the king. The temple is said to be more than 1500 years old.
Beliefs
People pray to Lord Shiva for removal of obstacles in marriage talks and for child boon. Those facing debt burdens pray to Lord Bhairava for relief. Devotees perform abishek and offer vastras to Lord and Mother. Newly wedded couples pray here with abishek and Vastras to both for happy married life. Couples separated due to some reasons pray here for re-union. Those worried about their debt burdens pray here.
Special Features
The temple is situated on the northern bank of River Tambiraparani. Presiding Deity is called as Veera Marthandeswarar. Utsavar is Somaskandar. Mother is called as Nithya Kalyani. Theertham is Harihara Theertham. Mother Graces from a shrine left of the Lord. It is said that Lord and Mother Grace the devotees in Shiva-Shakti form in the temple. Conforming to the philosophy, the prakara covers both Lord and Mother shrines. Sun God, Juradevar, Nalvar the four Saivite saints, Kanni Vinayaka, Balasubramanya-Muruga, Chandikeswara, Saneeswara Saturn, Navagrahas the nine planets and Chandra the Moon have shrines in the prakara.
Festivals
Karthikai wedding festival in November-December; Margazhi Thiruvadirai in December-January, Purattasi Navarathri in September-October is the festivals celebrated in the temple. The wedding festival of Lord and Mother is celebrated on the Uthiram star day in the month of Karthikai-November- December. Special pujas are performed in the Kala Bhairava shrine on the 8th day of new moon fortnight.
