Puranic Significance

During the construction of the port at Thoothukudi, the workers who were engaged in the task of cutting the rocks from a nearby hill, prayed to their favourite deity to relieve their tiredness and fatigue. It was customary to engrave the inscription Om on a rock. Over time people began to build houses and settle in the foothills. Every day in the mornings and evenings, a peacock flew out of nowhere and stood on the rock where the workers worshiped Murugan, spreading their wings and dancing. Day by day people, wondering what could be the reason for this to happen, saw one day climbing the mountain. They were amazed to see the rock carvings there and decided to build a temple to Lord Murugan at this place. So the temple called as Mayileri Murugan Temple.
