Introduction

Someshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Agara in Bengaluru South Taluk in Bengaluru Urban District, in the Indian state of Karnataka. The Temple is situated on Outer Ring Road, near Koramangala and HSR Layout on Madiwala to Sarjapura route.

Puranic Significance 

The temple is believed to have been constructed by the Imperial Cholas in the 11th century CE. It is oriented towards the east, and as you approach the sanctum, you will find Nandi, the sacred bull, the Balipeedam (sacrificial altar), and a stone Dhwaja Sthamba (flagpole) all facing the sanctum.

The temple’s architecture includes a sanctum, an ardha mandapa (half hall), and a maha mandapa (grand hall). The presiding deity is known as Someshvara and is enshrined in the sanctum in the form of a Linga. An interesting belief associated with this Linga is that the ghee applied to it during abhishekam (ritual bath) transforms into butter. The temple is under the protection of the Karnataka state division of the Archaeological Survey of India. Within the temple premises, there is a separate east-facing shrine dedicated to Parvathy, situated to the left side of the sanctum. Additionally, a newly constructed east-facing shrine for Lord Ayyappa can also be found within the temple complex. Some hero stones, which are commemorative sculptures dedicated to heroes and warriors, can also be observed in the temple premises.
