Introduction

  • The temple is located in the middle of the town and can be reached by getting down at the Adalaiyur or Alamarathadi bus stops.

Deity:

  • The presiding deity is Bheemeshwarar (a form of Lord Shiva).
  • The consort of Lord Shiva is Anandavalli.
  • The temple is believed to be 1000 years old, although it is currently in a dilapidated state with renovation work underway.

Puranic Significance:

  • According to legend, Shiva and Parvati once played the Thiruvilayadal game in which they transformed into various forms.
  • Parvati did not recognize Shiva, who appeared as a cow. The cow was tied up in the town, and Parvati untied it, realizing it was Shiva in disguise. The place got its name Adalaiyur from this event, where “Aa” means cow and “Thalai” means tying.
  • Bheema, one of the Pandavas, visited the temple before the Kurukshetra War. He bathed in the lotus pond, worshipped Lord Shiva, and prayed for strength to win the war. Shiva blessed him with a vision, and Bheema was victorious in the battle. Hence, the temple is also called Bheemeshwarar.

Beliefs:

  • It is believed that worshipping Bheemeshwarar can help those who have lost in elections or lost their position or property to regain them. Devotees come here for blessings related to recovery of lost fortunes and positions.
