Introduction
Thiruvilaiyattam Annamalaiyar Shiva Temple is dedicated to lord shiva, located in the Thiruvilaiyattam village, Tharangambadi Circle, Mayiladuthurai District, Tamil Nadu state, India. The presiding deity is called as Annamalaiyar (Shiva) in the form of lingam. Nandi is placed outside the temple. Thiruvidaiyattam is the land donated to the Perumal Temple. In the middle of the town is this ancient Shiva temple of the Chola period is located. The temple is complete ruins state. The Temple is believed to be more than 1000 years old shiva temple in this town.
Puranic Significance
The majestic east facing temple is made of black stone up to the sanctum sanctorum and the upper part of it is made of red brick. The sanctum sanctorum of Ambika is built of stone up to the foundation and of brick on top of it. Ambika name is unknown. Panchakoshtas around the sanctum sanctorum. Durga is missing, but only Makishan’s buffalo head is presented in the temple. The Lord is taken from the sanctuary and placed in the corridor area.
