Introduction
Sirkazhi – Poompuhar road 3 km to Thiruvenkadu. The Sambapathi Amman Temple is located to the right of the Saikkadudaiyar Temple. Renovated by the Cholas, the temple has fallen into disrepair and is now in ruins with a brick display. Thus, Goddess Sambhapati has a spear on the roof. The ruined Sambapati Amman Temple is guarded by two gigantic brick giants. The tragedy is that the idol of the ancient Goddess Sambhapati is not in this temple. Placed in the nearby Sayavaneswarar Temple. At present, the ancient Sambhapati Amman Temple is surrounded by shrubs and thorns that no one can approach. The temple is in complete disrepair without adequate maintenance. The statues of the giants are also buried in the soil, most of which are broken and found in a very pitiable condition with moss glaze. The horse and elephant idols in the temple are also badly damaged.
Puranic Significance
The Sambapati Amman Temple and the Square Giants are important in this. Silappathikaram describes the Sambapathiamman temple and the square giants who catch and eat the evil ones. The sad news is that these two historic monuments of such significance are now crumbling and unheard of. Silappathikaram says that Goddess Sambapati is the deity of Madhavi. The Manimegala epic says that the deity who rescued Manimegala from the expelled Udayakumaran. According to Manimegala, the Sambapathi Amman Temple was known as Kucharakkudikai and was located near the cemetery at Kavirip Poompattinam. There is a story that the goddess Sambhapati stood on the land as a goddess to protect the good, just as the goddess Manimekala stood in the sea and guarded those who went to Marakkala for trade. These are the square giants who are symbolized in the syllabary by the youngsters as ‘lying will kill you’. These giants are not idle if they think they have to make a mistake. Let’s chase someone who thinks like that, stand in the middle of the street, and bite them so that the whole town can see them. # “With the kind permission of Sri Kadambur K. Vijayan, these are extracted from his posts”.
