Introduction
Thirumoolastanam is a village located 3 km east of Kattumannarkoil. There are two Shiva temples here. we see now is Kailasanathar on 50 cents land. The temple has beautiful sculptures that are a testament to the architecture of the early Cholas. Sunlight falls on the source during the first week of Chittirai.TheAusthanaMandabam is built of small bricks in the shape of a cone. Inscriptions in ‘Kirantha Letter’ are found on the outer wall of the sanctum sanctorum. Plants and the bushes all over the temple premises and are in a state of disrepair. There is a sculpture to describe a Agathiyar worshiping Lord Shiva. The temple is said to have been built by a king named Nusacholan. Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati have worshiped the God to rid the World of Sorrows or atleast lessen it.. When all the living beings of the world came together in one place to see the marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvathi, the northern part came down and the southern part rose and Shiva called Agathiyar and ordered him to go to the south to rectify the situation. Agathiyar set up lingam shrines and worshiped wherever he went. The temple is one of such lingams. Later a temple was build here. There is a pond in front of the temple facing east. Some of idols of the temple were found inside the tank a few years ago. The Lord is facing east and the Goddess is facing south. The Agathiyar is in large form near the place of worship of Saturn. # “With the kind permission of Sri Kadambur K. Vijayan, these are extracted from his posts”.
