Introduction
Thirumoolasthanam is a village located at a distance of 3 km east of Kattumannarkoil. There are two Shiva temples here. What we see now is the two acre Tirumulanathar Temple.This temple is the oldest and its was built in 968 AD by Aditya II. 23 inscriptions were copied in this temple. The inscriptions of Adithan II, Parakesari, Rajakesari, Rajendran, Kulothungan,Vickramasolan, Rajathirajan II, Kulothungan III and Rajarajan III are in the kirtham and Tamil l. The name of the Lord is Moolathanathu Alvar.
Puranic Significance
No Raja Gopuram over sanctum sanctorum. The boulder is set with limestone on top of it. The temple is very dilapidated and Siddhi Ganesha is inside the hall with Ganesha’s wife Siddhi. The Lord is facing east, the Goddess is facing south. In the Mahamandapam there is the Navagraha Bhairavand Sun. Natarajar dances to the south.
