Introduction

This shiva temple is located in the Maruvathur village, Perambalur district. Klothunga Chozha lll’s second regional year inscription had been engraved at the north wall of the mandapa. It explains all details about the Lingam establishment, Donation of Lord Ganesha and Lord Kshetrabalar statues, Donation of 63 Nayanmars copper idols and Donation of lands, and the boundary of the land and the equipment which was used for the measurements. And, one more inscription of the same emperor on the north mandapa had recorded the food offerings, Land donation. The same village name had been mentioned in the inscriptions.

Puranic Significance

We saw about Maruvathur Varatharaja Perumal temple and Klothunga Chozha lll & Rajaraja Chozhar lll inscriptions. Right opposite to the Varatharaja Perumal temple, Azhagiya Nayanar Shiva temple is situated in a walk able distance. Almost everything had been ruined in this temple. It is in very pathetic state rather than the Varatharaja Perumal temple. Temple Vimana, Tower (gopuram) and the wall are almost ruined badly. The temple stands the amid of dense bushes. Even though the Vimana had been demolished completely, the statue of Lord Shiva Lingam stands as an evidence to prove its existence. Ganesha statue kept outside of a mandapa and Nandhi status are scattered inside the temple. “With the kind permission of Sri Kadambur K. Vijayan, these are extracted from his posts”.
