Introduction

Karuppurvijayavitankesvarar temple in Tamil Nadu, Thanjavur district , Karuppur village .The temple is located near Kandiyur, very close to Thanjavur. It is located at a distance of 22 km from Thanjavur. There is no shortage of learning in Chola temples .The Chola kings are credited with turning many red sandstone and clay into learning. This temple is located in this glorious Chola country. The primary deity is Lord Vijayavidangeswarar, Amman Sri Sukandakunchalambal. The temple is in an open area; the walls are shattered without a perimeter wall. The Shiva temple is located facing east and Ambal facing north. Karpagiragam ArthaMandapam is a screw-built structure made entirely of stones with a combination of the two systems. In the womb, Vijayavidangeshwara is portrayed as a lingam and an avudaya. The sculptures and reliefs painted on the walls of the sanctum sanctorum and the hall of meaning are very ancient . Their architectural style is that of ParanthakaChola to KulothungaChola.It is also noteworthy that this architectural style did not feature later. Such a system dates back to the 9th to 11th centuries. Each deity is adorned with a Capricorn pose above the half pillars.

Puranic Significance

The Mother Sanctuary is located on the same premises near the Shiva temple. Attempts to examine these as contemporary donations have seen many changes in the structure and the use of bricks in the canopy.. It appears to have been built in the 11th – 12th centuries and later during the reconstruction it is confirmed that the canopy structure and plane were made of bricks. .It is believed that the rubble found in the ruins of the temple has been used for temple construction elsewhere. The Senthalaikovil located in this area is very old. So these stones may have been used to rebuild the temple In that way some inscriptions are found on the inside of the tower. We know from the inscriptions that they are not the stones of this temple.
