Puranic Significance
It is a small temple and Lord Sankaranarayana has an eastern sanctum sanctorum, opposite the Nandi and the altar. Goddess Sankaranarayani has a sanctum facing south. Ganesha is in a small chapel in the southwest and the Murugan in the northwest. Sanders are on the prowl. There is a shrine of Perumal and his mother at the back of the sanctum sanctorum. They have placed them here under the name of Lakshmi Narayan. The temple is said to be 500years old and is in need of restoration. Due to the small size of the village, only a few people visit the temple during the day time. The house of the priest is on the main road near the temple. Although it is a Shiva temple, it is popularly known as the Saneeswarar Temple. Legend says, Once Sanibagavan was travelling from Thirukollikkad to Thirunallar sitting on the back of a crow, his vehicle. If it is night the crow will not know the eye. Saturn Bhagavan was going to Thirunallar as it was time to catch Nala Maharaj in his previous birth. When the area was in such a state, night had come. The one who descends to Kariyur (Kari means Saturn) without any other option stays there and performs Shiva Puja. Since we have given you the shelter to stay here for the night, you should reduce the number of devotees who worship us here from here in the name of Mangala Saturn, even if it is Saturn Tosha, and send them grace so that their life may be Mangala. Unable to disobey the order of Lord Shiva, he sends blessings to the devotees who come and sit in this temple as Mangala Saneeswara to reduce the impact of Saturn Dosha and make them Mangala in life. “With the kind permission of Sri Kadambur K.
